The Studio

Kilnward is a one-studio operation in Portland, Oregon. Two kilns, a 900-square-foot studio lease, and a single principle: make stoneware that earns its place on a table.

How we work

Every piece is thrown, trimmed, glazed, and fired in-house. We mix our own glazes from raw materials — silica, feldspar, colorants sourced from two domestic suppliers — which is why Saltgrass looks like Saltgrass and not like an off-the-shelf dip. Cone 10 reduction firing means the clay body and the glaze are under real heat for hours. The variation you see in the finished piece is the kiln's work, not an aesthetic choice we made at a computer.

The drop model

We release one collection per quarter. Each drop is limited to the number of settings we can produce and quality-check in that firing cycle. When a collection sells out, the glaze formula retires — we won't fire the same batch twice. Open stock pieces stay available so a chipped plate or broken bowl can always be replaced without stranding a set.

Why stoneware

Porcelain is beautiful and brittle. Earthenware is light and porous. Stoneware sits between them: dense, chip-resistant, safe for the oven and the dishwasher. It's the right clay body for a piece meant to be used.

The waitlist
